Artist Statement
Driving Themes
Hidden histories. Untold stories. Sociopathy. Human trafficking. These subjects captivated Angela long before she entered the art world — impossible to set aside, impossible to ignore.
Angela's artistic journey is driven by a deep fascination with hidden histories and untold stories, particularly those related to sociopathy and the ongoing issue of human trafficking. Growing up, she struggled to understand why her family's history is treated as a hidden narrative in Japan, where the suffering endured by her family and many Koreans has been systematically erased or distorted. This injustice fuels her creative drive to uncover the voices of those whose stories have been silenced.
Her work reflects both personal and collective pain, focusing on Korea's colonial history and the broader scope of Japanese invasions. She approaches these subjects with courage, believing in the importance of confronting uncomfortable truths and preserving the memories of those erased by history — while remaining wary of the divisive ideologies of extreme nationalism.
In her art, Angela incorporates humor and pop art elements to engage viewers with complex, often heavy topics in a way that is both thought-provoking and visually accessible. Her work continues to evolve, blending personal, cultural, and historical narratives with diverse artistic forms — exploring themes beyond pain, such as the environmental destruction of Korea's spring due to climate change and pollution. Alongside these serious themes, she finds joy in works that explore personal identity through childhood memories, poetry, collaborations, and reimagined fairy tales.
